Trafficware is excited to announce the upcoming release of Synchro 10, supporting the latest edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) 6th Edition methodology for signalized and unsignalized intersections, two-way-stop-control intersections, all-way-stop-control intersections, and roundabouts. Synchro 10's user interface was updated, introducing a new look and feel with easy-to-use ribbon bar controls. For the HCM 6th Edition, the roundabout methodology has been updated to include new capacity model based on recent FHWA-sponsored research. Beyond the traditional focus on vehicular movement, the recent HCM 6th Edition builds on the multimodalism concepts introduced in the HCM 2010, allowing engineers to asses the overall transportation experience from the user's perspective.

one of the things I've always appreciated about synchro was the GUI. The Ribbon is a step away from that I think. I've never liked it in Office and I'm not sure I like it here...

We've tried to organize the new ribbon by task, to help improve efficiency. People work differently, so it's also highly customizable. Tutorials on the customization will follow, to help everyone make the most of the new tools. I hope you'll give it a chance!

honestly, I just see the ribbon as being more clicky, and so less efficient. the more clicks it takes to get to a task the worse it is. The side ribbon in 8 works fine.

This ribbon bar actually takes up less space than the toolbar in Synchro 9. It also has the ability to auto-hide, taking up almost no room at all.

In addition to Nick's comments, it would be extremely beneficial in future versions to allow to select a certain number of intersections, then move the offset for all the selected intersections simultaneously. Currently if you want to move more than one offset it requires moving every single offset separately, which introduces error as well as accumulates over large networks. Something to think about!

are you referring to signal offset or link geometric offset?

I can't speak for Tyler, but I can tell you that myself and our development team interpreted this request as the signal offset.

Thanks for the feedback, Tyler! That's a great idea. Do you imagine that feature added to the Time-Space Diagram, or elsewhere in the software?

For sure in the Time Space Diagram, maybe it just carries through?

This would be a great addition to the software. I've shared it with the development team and added it to our roadmap. Thanks for the feedback!

No changes were made to the TIA module in the initial release of 10. Is there something specific you're hoping for?

We do have several customers using Synchro for left side driving analysis. They simply switch the left and right turns. In the future we would like to develop a more seamless approach to support left side driving without needing to make this conversion. Thanks for the feedback!

I am doing some capacity analysis for unsignalized intersection. Basically it is a 3-lanes service drive road parallel to freeway and minor street are attached to this. I input peak hour volumes for unsignalized intersections along service drive but control delay and LOS is not showing. How can we calculate LOS for such scenario?

Saroj, Synchro 10 supports analysis of unsignalized intersection that are two-way-stop-control or all-way-stop-control. It sounds like the situation you've described is a TWSC intersection. Synchro uses HCM methodology, so there are a few limitations related number of lanes, etc. Without seeing your file, it's impossible to say specifically what's going on. Assuming you're using HCM 6th Edition, you may find Section 4 of this document helpful: http://www.trafficware.com/uploads/2/2/2/5/22256874/hcm6th_working_white_paper_synchro.pdf

Andres, that's a great suggestion. To clarify, are you referring to European style signal phasing, the layout of the signal heads, or something else?

Why do the result delay values vary so greatly between HCM 2000 and HCM 6th for unsignalized intersections? Which is more accurate to report?

For most unsignalized intersections the results between HCM 2000, HCM 2010, and HCM 6th Edition should be similar. However, HCM 6th Edition does include some new features such improvements for 6 lane roadways. If you have questions about a specific intersection, please submit it to our support team.

Does Synchro 10 produce segment, facility results for pedestrians, bicycles analysis?

Pedestrian and Bicycle analysis is included for some intersection types, but not segments.
